What are the dossing rules?

the dossing rules

It's perfectly normal to crash on a mate's couch or floor when you arrive in London, but you don't want to overstay your welcome.

You should chip in at least £5 a night (to help pay for communal things like loo rolls etc) and you should obey the Dossing Rules. Learn them by heart.

The Dossing Rules

1. Don't wait to be asked to clean something.

2. If your rubbish won't balance on the pile, take out the garbage.

3. Don't phone home without asking.

4. Don't look at porn on the computer.

5. Always make sure the housemate gets the phone messages you took when they were at work.

6. If you can't cook, at least buy the ingredients.

7. If you won't buy the ingredients, at least buy bread and milk.

8. Never drink beer unless offered. Beer always belongs to someone else.

9. If you're sleeping in the loungeroom, you go to bed when everyone has finished watching TV.

10. Never take charge of the remote. It always belongs to someone else.

What if the dosser wants to stay on and off between travels and work for 6 to 8 weeks? would you ask them to chip in more than 5 and maybe also help with bills? or is that a bit rude?
And don't stay for month when your mates who have been in a very long term relationship and have finally got a place to themselves to shag need a little space!

11. Acknowledge your company is going to be frustrating so try to get out of the place at least 50% of the time when your hosts are home from work to ensure they also have peace n quiet while you stay... Dont become a social responsibility
Where is the old poster in pdf format?

Some people really take the piss and try and stay for months on and off without paying rent, this is just not fair to the rent paying people in the house. It may damage the friendship but it's OK to tell a dosser it's time to go, OR to pay a decent amount of rent. For longer staying dossers 5 pound is not acceptable, should be a bit less than what a person in a room is paying. Things like toilet paper etc all add up in cost, so a dosser must contribute to household items. There's a great video on moving2london about dossing and the dossing rules, http://www.moving2london.com/index.php/Videos-Reg/accommodation-on-arrival.html check it out.

Haha - love the rules! Dossing was just a new term for us - such a great concept though! We arrived from Australia 2 months ago and have been dossing ever since, although we have finally found a place and will be moving in with some of our housemates in a couple of weeks. Can't thank the house enough for letting us doss for so long.
